We had a great start in the 1st round of the Asian School Chess Championship 2011, which commenced here at Indira Gandhi International Indoor Stadium, New Delhi. 12-year old, Siddharth Godambe (ELO 1249) of St Lawrence High School, Borivali scored one of the biggest victory of his career when he outwitted higher rated Abdulla Ahmed of UAE – rated at 1694 – nearly 440 points more than Siddharth from the White-side of the Grunfeld Indian Defense. 12-year old Mayur Ade from Virar always prefers to play in the stronger events and this has reaped him enough dividends as he secured 5th position in the ‘Open Event’ of the Parle Mahotsav, which concluded last week at Sathaye College, Vile Parle. Mayur, who had a creditable performance in the recenty concluded State Championship and continued his good run by scoring a whopping 7/9 to bag the trophy for the 5th positon! 10-year old ICS trainee, Jinay Nandu has bagged the 3rd place in the Under-10 category of the Parle Chess Mahotsav with a score of 5/6. Jinay, a student of Thakur Public School, plays regularly and has won good number of prizes. He has set his sight to become a FIDE-Rated player soon. One of the recipe for the Chess player’s success is to participate in strong events, especially the FIDE Rated events. Such events brings about a great change in the young developing player’s approach to the game. They develop the tenacity to sit on the board, facing challenges not seen before on the board. 13-year old, Aakash Rao from Rustomjee International has completed the rating requirements of meeting the 9-players in the Capabalanca’s Mumbai Open FIDE Rating Tournament. Aakash is expected to enter the July 2011 FIDE Rating list. Meanwhile Mihir Jadhav and Siddharth Godambe also have earned partial rating in the same event.
13-year old, Aditya Sukhlecha completed his FIDE Rating requirements of meeting the 9-players in the Capabalanca’s Mumbai Open FIDE Rating Tournament with a score of 5.5/9. Aditya is expected to enter the July 2011 FIDE Rating list with a rating of 1599.
